research chemical raises a handful of sensible questions. This page answers them in order, starting with the fundamentals and moving to applications.
Reviewed 2025-11-23. Anything still debated is marked as such rather than presented as settled.
Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is the routine method for purity assessment. Peptides absorb near 214 nm because of the peptide bond, and a gradient of acetonitrile in water separates the intact peptide from deletion sequences, oxidised products, and earlier-eluting fragments at neutral pH. Electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry provides an orthogonal check: the measured mass must agree with the theoretical value. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping confirm structure but are used less often. Reference standards remain scarce because the peptide is not described in any pharmacopoeia.
Regulatory treatment varies by country. In the United States the peptide is not approved as a medicine, and products offered for human use may be treated as unapproved new drugs; some states also restrict sale. Australia, the United Kingdom, and European Union member states apply comparable restrictions to unapproved peptide products. Border agencies have seized shipments labelled as research chemicals. Classification may change over time, and the legal position for personal importation is not clearly settled in most published guidance.
Published pharmacokinetic information is limited and comes mainly from small studies rather than registrational trials. Plasma half-life is usually described as short, on the order of tens of minutes, followed by rapid tissue distribution and clearance of the intact peptide. Metabolites and low concentrations of parent compound have been reported in urine, a detail relevant to anti-doping and forensic testing. Whether repeated exposure changes receptor sensitivity or clearance over time remains an open question. Values differ noticeably between analytical assays, so published numbers should be read as approximate rather than definitive.
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide with the sequence Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2, corresponding to a molecular formula of C50H69N15O9 and a monoisotopic mass near 1024 daltons. It was designed as a structural analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, a peptide hormone produced by cleavage of proopiomelanocortin. A lactam bridge between the aspartate and lysine side chains closes the ring, and the C-terminal amide removes a free carboxyl group. Both modifications increase resistance to enzymatic degradation compared with the linear parent hormone. Four substitutions distinguish it from afamelanotide, the linear analogue studied under the name melanotan I.

Melanotan-2 appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list within the peptide hormone class, and several national regulators treat it as an unapproved prescription substance. Some countries restrict importation or sale for personal use. Because the compound is widely traded as a research chemical, the practical legal picture differs between jurisdictions and shifts over time. Human safety data covering long periods are limited, and whether repeated pigmentation changes carry any lasting risk to melanocytes remains an open question.
Freeze-dried melanotan-2 is normally kept as a desiccated powder at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower, shielded from light and moisture. Peptides of this size degrade through hydrolysis, oxidation and deamidation, and each pathway accelerates as temperature and water activity rise. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles promote aggregation and loss of material, so aliquoting a stock solution before freezing is standard laboratory practice. Once dissolved, the solution is markedly less stable than the powder. In laboratory work, solutions are generally refrigerated and used within days rather than kept for months.
Melanotan II binds several melanocortin receptor subtypes rather than a single target. MC1R on melanocytes drives melanin synthesis, while MC3R and MC4R participate in energy balance, appetite, and sexual response pathways. This lack of selectivity explains why reported effects extend beyond skin darkening. Substitutions at positions four and seven, including norleucine and D-phenylalanine, increase potency and resistance to peptidases. Understanding which receptor mediates which effect remains an active area of investigation.
Published human data come mostly from small, short studies rather than large controlled trials. Reported outcomes include increased skin pigmentation and, in some reports, effects on appetite and libido, but sample sizes are small and follow-up is limited. Whether long-term use produces durable pigment changes or adverse effects is not established. Because products sold outside pharmacies are not standardized, the actual content of any given vial is often unknown. Independent testing of such material is uncommon.
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog derived from the core sequence of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Researchers at the University of Arizona synthesized it during the 1980s while studying pigmentation and appetite signaling. The compound is not an approved medicine in any major jurisdiction and appears mainly in laboratory and research-chemical settings. Its structure incorporates a lactam bridge between side chains, which constrains the ring and slows enzymatic breakdown relative to the natural hormone.
Solid peptide material is generally stable when kept cold and dry. Common practice is storage at -20 degrees Celsius or lower, with desiccant and protection from light. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles and exposure to moisture are associated with degradation, aggregation, or loss of material. Once dissolved, stability depends on solvent, concentration, and temperature, and solutions are usually treated as short-lived unless stability data support longer periods. Handling notes typically emphasise minimising time at ambient temperature.
Identity and purity are assessed with chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques. Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates the target peptide from related impurities and degradation products, and the resulting retention time is compared against a reference standard. Mass spectrometry, often coupled to liquid chromatography, confirms molecular mass. Amino acid analysis or peptide mapping can provide additional sequence-level confirmation when required. Results are only as reliable as the reference materials used alongside them.
Until the 1970s there was considerable debate within psychiatry on the most appropriate term to use to describe the new drugs. In the late 1950s the most widely used term was "neuroleptic", followed by "major tranquilizer" and then "ataraxic". The first recorded use of the term tranquilizer dates from the early nineteenth century. In 1953 Frederik F. Yonkman, a chemist at the Swiss-based Cibapharmaceutical company, first used the term tranquilizer to differentiate reserpine from the older sedatives. The word neuroleptic was coined in 1955 by Delay and Deniker after their discovery (1952) of the antipsychotic effects of chlorpromazine. It is derived from the Greek: "νεῦρον" (neuron, originally meaning "sinew" but today referring to the nerves) and "λαμβάνω" (lambanō, meaning "take hold of"). Thus, the word means taking hold of one's nerves. It was often taken to refer also to common side effects such as reduced activity in general, as well as lethargy and impaired motor control. Although these effects are unpleasant and in some cases harmful, they were at one time, along with akathisia, considered a reliable sign that the drug was working. The term "ataraxy" was coined by the neurologist Howard Fabing and the classicist Alister Cameron to describe the observed effect of psychic indifference and detachment in patients treated with chlorpromazine. This term derived from the Greek adjective "ἀτάρακτος" (ataraktos), which means "not disturbed, not excited, without confusion, steady, calm".
== Epidemiology == ALD has not been shown to have an increased incidence in any specific country or ethnic group. In the United States, the incidence of affected males is estimated at 1:21,000. Overall incidence of hemizygous males and carrier females is estimated at 1:16,800. The reported incidence in France is estimated at 1:22,000.
Selective cleavage of Arg18-Gly19 and Arg46-Thr47 bonds in coagulogen to form coagulin and fragments This enzyme is present in the hemocyte granules of horseshoe crabs Limulus and Tachypleus. In the immunity-related clotting pathways of these organisms, it is the final enzyme responsible for the activation of coagulin.
3 spot in Entrepreneur magazine's 31st Annual Franchise 500, "the first and most comprehensive ranking in the world". This was the 17th year 7-Eleven was named in the top 10. In February 2010, 7-Eleven opened a concept store in DeLand, Florida, across from Stetson University, designed to meet LEED environmental standards. In 2017 they bought 1,110 C-Stores convenience stores from Sunoco in a deal valued at $3.3 billion and in 2024 acquired 204 Stripes convenience stores from Sunoco in a deal valued at $1 billion and finished integrating them in 2026. By 2015, 7-Eleven had over 55,000 stores across the world. In 2020, 7-Eleven announced it would purchase Speedway, 23,000 stores, for $21 billion. In 2021, 7-Eleven rolled out a $70 million ad campaign, their largest investment in advertising in years, doubling their market spending from the previous year. The commercials, directed by Harmony Korine, were to reflect the "evolution" of the chain's store format, drawing attention to, in part, the fact that "this isn't just gas station food, there's real restaurant quality food at 7-Eleven", according to CMO Marissa Jarrantt. On August 19, 2024, it was reported that Alimentation Couche-Tard—owner of competitor Circle K—had made a buyout offer for Seven & i Holdings. Later, on September 6, 2024, Seven & i Holdings rejected this offer as too low and rife with regulatory risk, although a "sweetened offer" might be considered. In October, a revised bid of $47 billion, 22% increase of the previous one, was presented.
At the end of the 1950s, the USSR constructed the first satellite—Sputnik 1, which marked the beginning of the Space Race—a competition to achieve superior spaceflight capability with the United States. This was followed by other successful satellites, most notably Sputnik 5, where test dogs were sent to space. On 12 April 1961, the USSR launched Vostok 1, which carried Yuri Gagarin, making him the first human to ever be launched into space and complete a space journey. The first plans for space shuttles and orbital stations were drawn up in Soviet design offices, but personal disputes between designers and management prevented their development. In terms of the Luna program, the USSR only had automated spacecraft launches with no crewed spacecraft. The N1—a Super heavy-lift launch vehicle intended to match the American Saturn V for a Soviet crewed moon landing—failed all four of its test launches, and the 'Moon' part of Space Race was won by the Americans. The Soviet public's reaction to the American moon-landing was mixed. The Soviet government limited the release of information about it, which affected the reaction. A portion of the populace did not give it attention, and another portion was angered. In the 1970s, specific proposals for the design of a space shuttle emerged, but shortcomings, especially in the electronics industry (rapid overheating of electronics), postponed it till the end of the 1980s. The first shuttle, the Buran, flew in 1988, but without a human crew. Another, Ptichka, endured prolonged construction and was canceled in 1991.

=== Early work === After completing her medical training in 1912, Lawrence briefly worked as a resident pathologist in Boston. That same year, she relocated to Portland, Oregon where she worked with tuberculosis specialist Ralph Matson. Lawrence established her own clinical laboratory in the Selling Building in 1913. She directed the laboratory for more than fifty years, providing diagnostic services to physicians and public agencies throughout Oregon. Lawrence conducted experimental work related to infectious disease and kept laboratory animals, including guinea pigs, at her home on Southeast Peacock Lane for research purposes.
The yR design approach provides an unvarying reaction site with regard to both (a) distance between reactants and (b) sequence environment surrounding the reaction site. Furthermore, the intimate connection between the code and the BB on the oligo-BB moieties which are mixed combinatorially in a single pot confers a high fidelity to the encoding of the library. The code of the synthesized products, furthermore, is not preset, but rather is assembled combinatorially and synthesized in synchronicity with the innate product.
==== Co-evolutionary evidence ==== An independent molecular analysis trying to establish the dates when bat ectoparasites (bedbugs) evolved came to the conclusion that bedbugs similar to those known today (all major extant lineages, all of which feed primarily on bats) had already diversified and become established over 100 million years ago, suggesting that they initially all evolved on non-bat hosts and "bats were colonized several times independently, unless the evolutionary origin of bats has been grossly underestimated". No analysis has provided estimates for the age of the flea lineages associated with bats. The oldest known members of a different lineage of bat ectoparasites (bat flies), however, are from roughly 20 million years ago, well after the origin of bats. The bat-ectoparasitic earwig family Arixeniidae has no fossil record but is not believed to originate more than 23 million years ago.
=== American aircraft pilots === Beginning in April 2010, fluoxetine became one of four antidepressant drugs that the FAA permitted for pilots with authorization from an aviation medical examiner. The other permitted antidepressants are sertraline (Zoloft), citalopram (Celexa), and escitalopram (Lexapro). These four remain the only antidepressants permitted by FAA as of 2 December 2016. Sertraline, citalopram, and escitalopram are the only antidepressants permitted for EASA medical certification, as of January 2019.
== Production == The donkey is considered a seasonal polyestrous animal. However, the latitudinal location of the farm can greatly impact the reproduction cycle. The female is normally pregnant for about 12 months. Donkey milk production differs greatly from that of conventional dairy species, especially in terms of milk supply, which is much more limited. The equid mammary gland has a low capacity (max 2.5 L) and a part of the milk production should be left to the foal. Milking may be carried out two or three hours after separation from the foal. Donkeys should be milked three times a day from 20 to 90 days after foaling. A female produces between 0.5 and 1.3 litres of milk a day for about 6–7 months. The variability of donkey milk production is due to many factors, such as individual milkability, nutrition, genetics and management of reproduction, in addition to milking management. Generally, a donkey farm for milk production is small, and has rarely more than ten heads or so. The largest donkey farm in Europe is found in northern Italy. The Montebaducco donkey farm in Quattro Castella, a comune in Emilia Romagna, Italy, has 800 donkey heads.

HGSA Council scrutinizes and considers these nominations before awarding.
=== Glands === Both the thyroid and adrenal glands can be infiltrated. It is estimated that 10–20% of people with amyloidosis have hypothyroidism. Adrenal infiltration may be harder to appreciate given that its symptoms of orthostatic hypotension and low blood sodium concentration may be attributed to autonomic neuropathy and heart failure. "Amyloid deposits occur in the pancreas of people who also have diabetes mellitus, although it is not known if this is functionally important. The major component of pancreatic amyloid is a 37-amino acid residue peptide known as islet amyloid polypeptide or 'amylin.' This is stored with insulin in secretory granules in [beta] cells and is co secreted with insulin." (Rang and Dale's Pharmacology, 2015.)
== Interactions == Mianserin may enhance the sedative effects of drugs such as alcohol, anxiolytics, hypnotics, or antipsychotics when co-administered. It may decrease the efficacy of antiepileptic medications. Carbamazepine and phenobarbital will cause the body to metabolize mianserin faster and may reduce its effects. There is a risk of dangerously low blood pressure if people take mianserin along with diazoxide, hydralazine, or nitroprusside. Mianserin can make antihistamines and antimuscarinics have stronger effects. Mianserin should not be taken with apraclonidine, brimonidine, sibutramine, or the combination drug of artemether with lumefantrine.

Low temperature slows hydrolysis and oxidation, the two main routes by which the peptide backbone and side chains are modified. A lyophilised powder stored at −20 °C is more stable than one kept at room temperature, and once the material is dissolved the degradation rate rises, making refrigeration more important.
Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry is the most common approach because it combines a retention time with a mass measurement. A chromatographic peak alone cannot establish which peptide is present, so mass determination or amino acid analysis is used as an orthogonal confirmation alongside the separation.
This depends on buffer, pH, and concentration, and published stability data for this peptide are limited. In practice laboratories work through a refrigerated solution within a few weeks and discard samples that show cloudiness or visible particles. Freezing and thawing repeatedly is generally discouraged.
No. It is a synthetic analogue carrying four amino acid changes, a lactam ring and an amidated C-terminus. The natural hormone is a linear thirteen-amino-acid peptide processed from proopiomelanocortin.
